The 2005 festival supported The Jubilee Gardens Project, based in Purton Stoke. They are a registered charity, managed by a voluntary board of directors, and set up to provide education and training for adults who, because of varying mental or physical disability, experience learning difficulties.

We are pleased to announce that we raised over £1200 for this charity!

Their primary aim is to promote the development of horticultural skills, whilst maintaining growth in literacy, numeracy and social skills. Opportunity is also given to acquire knowledge of domestic routine and personal hygiene, in order to help the individual to achieve a greater degree of independence.

The Jubilee Gardens Project is based an old primary school at Purton Stoke. In addition to the main building, there are outbuildings, several glass houses and a number of polythene growing tunnels, some of which are sited in a field of 2.75 acres belonging to the project.

On the field site the students have helped to construct a patio and barbecue area complementing an ornamental pond feature and five large vegetable plots created as a result of the skill and dedication applied by the students. They run a stall outside the training centre from 9am to 3.45pm at which the public can purchase a wide range of vegetables, bedding plants, fushias and other plants. All these are grown (without the use of pesticides, herbicides or artificial fertilisers) by the students at the training centre.

The Social Services Dept of Swindon and North Wilts County Councils sponsor up to 16 day care places and our students are drawn from Swindon and North Wiltshire. Students arrive at the project either by using our minibus route or by volunteer driver.

In addition to the three full time staff, the project employs a specialist lecturer on four mornings a week for instruction in literacy and numeracy skills, as well as two afternoons for art and craft. It also employs a cook for three hours daily and several volunteers work with the students in various forms of general education, including cookery.

Along with sponsorship from Swindon and North Wilts County Councils, the continued success of the project is dependent on gifts from companies, societies and individuals. All donations received solely benefit the students to make their experience at Jubilee Gardens an enjoyable learning environment.

Please call if you would like to know more or make a donation. The Project Principal at the training centre will gladly show visitors around if they telephone first. The number is 01793 771539.
